1930s "Victoria" dress

Pattern: Du Barry #1035b, heavily modified

Fabric: peach rayon with a pink rose print

Construction Notes: This gown is bias-cut, with a bodice gathered into an inverted "V" and the back seam ending in a "V" at about my tailbone. I raised the neckline, lowered the seam beneath the bust, added a neckerchief collar, and shortened the dress to tea length. I also added a ties at the sides, to tie into a sash in the back.

Miscellaneous Ramblings: I based this dress off of one I saw in the August 1994 issue of the late great Victoria magazine. (See photos of the original dress here and here.) I based my dress off of a vintage pattern, but I actually made quite a few changes to the pattern to get the results I wanted. I am most pleased with the neckerchief collar, because I had no idea what I was doing there. I just got out some muslin and a pen and started drawing the shape I thought I'd want. Happily, it worked!! I think the pattern I used, Du Barry #1035b, is a great basic 1930s bias gown, which could be used as a base for almost any 1930s design! I will probably use it again and again!
